about

I usually come up with lyrics and then I have to figure out a melody to put with them. Melodies aren't my strong suite, but I had hot upon this simple chord progression. Bm - G, Bm - G, A - G, A - G that just would not leave me alone. Everytime I picked up a guitar, that chord pattern came out.

Once i remember talking about those old station wagons we had in the last 60's early 70's with the flip up rear facing seats You had no idea where you were going, but you could tell where you had been. That kind of describes my life. I've not been much for making or following a plan, I've just kind of always gone with the flow and let things happen.

“I don’t know where I’m going, But I’ll tell you where I’ve been / and one thing that I’ve found is you can’t go back again”

You can't stick your finger into the same river twice. B y the tie you try to stick your finger back into the river, the water that you originally stuck your finger into has already flowed past. This is an entirely different river that your finger enters the second time.

Returning home on leave while I was in the Navy really brought this home for me. The old Home Town just wasn't the same old Home Town anymore. New people have moved in, other people moved away. The people who were still there have shared life experiences that your were not a part of. You have experienced things while you were away that they didn't

“I don’t know where I’m going, But I’ll tell you where I’ve been / and one thing that I’ve found is you can’t go back again”

That was supposed to be the chorus of the song. the song was supposed to be about change, but the song had different ideas and it went off in a completely different direction. Songs do that sometimes.

lyrics

I was headed down the highway, when I passed by this old man
He was walking on the shoulder with a guitar in his hand
I circled back around and I told him hop on in
If you'll tell me where your headed to I'll help you if I can

He said I don't know where I'm going, but I'll tell you where I've been
and one thing that Ive found out is you can't go back again
so I'm out here on this highway, gonna find out where it ends
Maybe play some sad old songs and make some brand new friends

we stopped off at a roadhouse up near the interstate
I bought us both some dinner, we sat and talked there while we ate
He told me of his life and his years upon the road
the people that he met and the stories that they told

He said I once knew a woman with hair of flaming red
she picked me up and fed me, then she took me to her bed
She told me of her husband whod been now two years dead
I held while she cried about the things she wished she'd said

He said you I don't own nothing but my clothes and this guitar
But a man who ain't got nothing is freer than a man who has it all
I always seem to come up with enough to get me by
there's more to life than chasing that dollar til you die

I want to thank you for the kindness that you've shown to this old man
I'd like to ask of you a favor, won't you help me if you can
Keep on spreading kindness as you travel down this road
stick your hand out to a stranger, try to help him with his load

Perhaps we'll meet again in that sweet by and by
There at the pearly gates where this road ends up in the sky
And the good Lord there will smile about the way we spent our days
Spreading love and kindness to those we met along our way-

We said our goodbyes and I headed back the way I came
and suddenly I realized my life would never be the same
And I don't know where I'm going but I'll tell you were Ive been
maybe sing some sad old songs and make some brand new friends
