“Three on the Tree” came about from another songwriting exercise. I started writing down every cliche, popular phrase, and cultural reference I could think of.

The problem that I was unaware of at the time is that all of my cultural references are w-a-y out of date.

“Float like a Butterfly Sting like a Bee”,
“Always wear clean underwear in case you get into a wreck”,
“Hi Ho Silver, Away”,

and then there is “Three on the Tree”. Most audiences I play for can’t even drive a manual transmission, much less have any idea what a three on the tree refers to. (Column shift manual transmission. The last year a 3-on-the-tree was available on a new production automobile was 1979)
